Glassdoor’s annual ‘Best Jobs in America’ survey is always a good barometer of what’s hot in the market and the tech skills organizations are most looking for. Their recently published 2019 list revealed that 17 of the top 50 roles were in technology-related fields.
Demand for Data
The standout role, whose stock continues to soar, is that of the data scientist. So it was no surprise to see it at the top of the tree. It’s been the number one ‘Best Job in America’ according to Glassdoor’s survey for the past four years, which goes to show just how important data analysis and insight is in shaping business decisions.
Let’s not forget that data scientists aren’t only on the radar of tech companies. Their technical knowledge is fully transferable across sectors and invaluable for businesses of all sizes. There are plenty of opportunities in the US market for data scientists, and in New York we see them command in excess of $200,000. And with good reason to, as the role requires knowledge of different areas, such as statistics, coding and database development.
If you’re looking purely at financial compensation, then you want to be a software engineer. At Roc Search we see Software Engineering roles pay £150,000 - £250,000 on a regular basis. On top of that, the best candidates can typically expect to juggle several job offers!
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs for software developers is forecast to grow by 24% from 2016-2026, which reflects the privileged position that this occupation now holds. One example is the market for java developers, which continues to be buoyant, given that it remains one of the most popular programming languages around.
AI will explode
No review of the tech jobs market in the US would be complete without mentioning AI and machine learning. It’s one of the fastest growing sectors, experts are in high demand and can expect to earn some of the highest average salaries in the industry. It’s a sector that we expect to really take off in 2019, although the talent pool of experts is still fairly limited.
The US tech market is in a healthy state and the right candidates can earn big bucks working for cutting-edge employers. But it’s not just about technical expertise – there is a big emphasis on teamwork and collaboration too, so professionals need to demonstrate strong people skills.
